The English Qabalah

There are traditions of working with words to uncover the mystical nature of the what is described. In particular, holy texts are explored to find hidden meanings. The three main methods are:

  • Gematria: converting letters to numbers and examining the relationship of words with the same numeric value.
  • Notariqon: the method of creating abbreviations. A word may be formed from the first letters of a phrase. Additionally each letter of a name may be used to create a sentence.
  • Temura:The use of anagrams. Words are rearranged to form another word. Systematic letter replacement may be employed.

These techniques have been employed with the Hebrew Kabbalah. There have been a number of attempts to use the same concepts with the English Alphabet. It is not possible to do a simple mapping between Hebrew and English. The Hebrew Alphabet has 22 letters and English has 26.

Perhaps the most common way to attempt the assignment of letters to number is what i'm referring to as A=1. The letter A=1, B=2, C=3 ... Z=26. This is also employed by Pythagorean numerologists.

The purpose of this website is to explore various methods of English Gemartia or English Qabalah. I really hope one of the methods will prove to be interesting and meaningful. It only takes a couple of minutes with a calculator and alphabet table to become convinced that it is not the way to go. So I have created a database and a some code to calculate and compare the systems.

Please visit the individual sections for more information of those methods. The comparison page can be used to look up numerical values and to see how well the systems relate to each other. I would love to hear any feed back and personal experience you may have had working with Gemetria.
